“It’s the place of sport at school, it starts from there! » It was with this sentence, widely relayed, that Stéphane Diagana analyzed on France Télévisions the disappointing results of the French team at the world athletics championships which took place in August. The former world champion in the 400 meters hurdles thereby opened up a perspective of action that we share to make our country a more sporting nation.

Beyond high performance, the issue of sport at school is a public health imperative. Scientists, experts, doctors agree on an edifying observation: a sedentary lifestyle and addiction to screens place our youth in a state of health emergency. Sport is also an essential factor in social cohesion because it teaches cooperation, respect for rules, and creates commonality.

Deputies and authors of a parliamentary report on economic and social benefits of the Olympic and Paralympic Games published in July, we have measured, throughout our work, the extent to which school and school sport constitute a response to these ambitions. This is why we call for putting sport at the heart of our public education policies.

The legacy of the Olympic Games will only be successful at the cost of developing sport for all, by breaking down barriers to practice, whether territorial, gender, economic or related. to disability. And this obviously involves school to create, from a very young age, what teachers call habitus of practice.

A subject in its own right

However, the place of sport in schools, from primary to higher education, is far from satisfactory. It is for this reason that several measures have been put in place in recent years, such as thirty minutes of daily physical and sporting activity in primary schools and the experimentation of two additional hours of weekly sport in certain secondary schools. But these measures, which are welcome, cannot be enough to fill our gaps: lack of infrastructure, overcrowded classes, lack of training among school teachers, insufficient hourly allocations.

The President of the Republic announced the strengthening of existing systems. We welcome these announcements very positively and we are seizing them in order to go further, higher, stronger, in our proposals.

First of all, we reaffirm that the pillar of sport at school is physical and sports education (PE). A subject in its own right, it must be reinforced in training and programs. We must guarantee every child four hours of PE per week, from preparatory school to final year. This discipline must also regain its rightful place within the national, patent and baccalaureate exams.
