Reinforce the protection of oyster huts, especially after a wave of burglaries last November, which marked the spirits. This is the objective of an agreement which has just been signed between the gendarmerieand the Arcachon Aquitaine Regional Shellfish Farming Committee (CRCAA).

“We are vulnerable, our oyster huts are not safes” recognizes Olivier Laban, president of the CRCAA. Professionals paid the price in November, when around 70 cabins were visited in the space of a weekend by a few burglars. “We had never known that. There have been thefts of all kinds, cash funds, equipment, not necessarily Oysters. Fortunately, thanks to the mobilization and the intelligence collected, the authorities managed to apprehend the thieves in record time. »

SMS alert device

The episode nevertheless convinced the shellfish farmers of Arcachon bay, to strengthen their relationship with the gendarmerie. “We are going to go further in the collaboration, we are going to structure ourselves, which will send a strong signal to the criminals”, assures Olivier Laban. The Gendarmerie has thus undertaken to set up targeted local prevention actions, to activate a specific security plan during periods considered sensitive, in particular before the end-of-year holidays which can represent up to 60% of the annual turnover of professionals, or to set up an SMS alert system for the benefit of shellfish farmers.

Actions that will complement the surveillance cameras already installed by certain professionals, and the system of “sworn guards”, shellfish farmers designated to monitor and inform the authorities. “We also didn’t hesitate to target certain individuals in whom there is, let’s say, limited trust…”, emphasizes Olivier Laban.

Because burglaries can be carried out by professionals, or outsiders. “There have always been oyster thefts at sea, there what seems new are the thefts from our cabins on land” worries the president of the CRCAA.

“A low tide at noon is of little interest to thieves”

Among the issues, “we will also have to improve our exchanges with the gendarmes, for example to explain which tides are the most favorable for flying”, continues Olivier Laban: “it is obvious that a low tide at noon is of little interest , on the other hand at 10 p.m. in the evening or 6 a.m., it is more convenient for thieves. There are also parks that are more vulnerable than others. “The agreement was signed until 2026. “There is a real desire to stop this phenomenon,” insists Olivier Laban.
