Due to the current situation, a critical level of terrorist threat has been declared in Kazakhstan. The special services received the right to inspect people, their belongings and vehicles, as well as wiretap conversations and enter living quarters. In addition, a counter-terrorist operation regime was introduced throughout the country.
Earlier, on January 5, the president of the republic, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, said that “terrorist gangs” whose members were trained abroad are trying to seize large infrastructure facilities. He called for the complete elimination of the militants in order to take control of the situation.
The President of Kazakhstan claimed that paratroopers of the country’s Defense Ministry were fighting against the “terrorists” near Alma-Ata. It is the “terrorists” who seize the premises with weapons and other important objects, and also fight with the cadets of the schools, he said.
Tokayev asked the CSTO member countries for help. The organization agreed to send a peacekeeping contingent to the country for a limited period.
