The Polisario Front accuses Spain of subordinating its interests to those of Morocco after corroborating the ‘turn’ over the Sahara

The Polisario Front delegate for Spain, Abdulah Arabi, denounced after the twelfth Spanish-Moroccan high-level meeting that the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, subordinates “the interests of Spain to the capricious wishes of the Kingdom of Morocco”.

This has been stated through a statement in which he criticizes Sánchez’s position with respect to Western Sahara “when defending the suitability of the solution proposed by Moroccoflatly ignoring that it is a question of unfinished decolonization on the part of Spain, which continues to be the administrative power of the territory”, as he affirms.

The Polisario Front delegate criticizes that Pedro Sánchez “and 11 ministers from his own party have signed several agreements on different matters. However, between trade agreements and migration policy, there has not been time to talk about the alarming situation of Human Rights in the occupied territory of Western Sahara”.

In Arabi’s opinion, “the socialist part of the Government has preferred to continue subjecting International Law, the Right to Self-determination of the Saharawi people to geostrategic and economic interests; when they should not be incompatible with each other, but their conjugation is what any country in the current multilateral international system should aspire to”.

Faced with this situation, he says that there are only two possible positions, on the one hand, “unambiguous” support for the political processes of the United Nations and the African Union to reach a political, fair and definitive solution, or “ignore the impositions of international law and continue to subordinate the interests of Spain to the capricious wishes of the Kingdom of Morocco”. And he adds that Pedro Sánchez “seems to have opted for the second according to his statements”.

For the Polisario Front, “there will be no hint of stabilitypeace and security in North Africa as long as decolonization is not resolved from Western Sahara. As long as the Saharawi people are not allowed to exercise their right to self-determination and independence, the escalation of tensions in the region will not cease”.

It also suggests that “a free and independent Saharawi State is the solution, among other aspects, because recognizing its existence will mean ceasing to make relations with Morocco subject to blackmail and corruption.” Spain has ratified this Thursday in the final declaration of the XII High Level Meeting (RAN) held in Rabat his support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict.
