MADRID, 18 years ago. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The presence of the Polisario has expressed this Sunday the rejection of the support of the Government of the Dominican Republic for the Moroccan integration plan for Western Sahara on the occasion of the visit to the Caribbean country of the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.

“The declared right and the right to self-determination and freedom of the Sahrawi people are inalienable and inalienable,” stressed the self-representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) for Caribbean countries, Mohamed Zrug, in a speech.

“Therefore, it is only for the people of Sub-Saharan Africa to exercise this right for a free and democratic choice of their political future,” he added.

The statement published on Friday by the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that President Luis Abinader “reiterated the Dominican Republic’s firm support for the Moroccan recognition of the Sahara” and expressed his desire to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla, in the region Sahrawi. .

“The president also said that the Dominican Republic considers the establishment plan made by Morocco as the only solution to the dispute over Western Sahara,” he concluded.

The former Spanish state of Western Sahara was occupied by Morocco in 1975 despite the opposition of the Polisario Front, with whom it was at war until 1991 when both signed a ceasefire with the aim of launching a self-determination initiative. Differences on the preparation of the census and the inclusion or not of Moroccan settlers have prevented it from being complete until now.

The new initiative for the Sahrawis has been the support of the Spanish Government for the Moroccan rehabilitation program, a change of situation described as oppression by the Polisario, which remembers that Spain is still the ‘de jure’ governing power of Western Sahara.
