August 23, 2022

It seems like Netflix viewers are getting into the Halloween spirit early this year, as the Russell Crowe thriller “The Pope’s Exorcist” has quickly risen to the top spot on the streaming platform’s most-watched movies list. Released on August 16, the supernatural drama has surpassed popular films like “Heart of Stone” starring Gal Gadot, the beloved family flick “Despicable Me,” and the gripping documentary “Untold: Johnny Football.” Check out the spine-chilling trailer below.

Directed by Julius Avery, known for his work on “Samaritan,” “The Pope’s Exorcist” is based on the books “An Exorcist Tells His Story” and “An Exorcist: More Stories” by Father Gabriele Amorth. The film follows Crowe as he portrays the real-life Father Amorth, the personal exorcist to the Pope.

When Father Amorth is sent to Spain to heal a boy believed to be possessed, he encounters his most challenging exorcism yet. Meanwhile, as the Pope falls ill, Father Amorth stumbles upon horrifying revelations that leave him questioning everything.

Alongside Academy Award-winning star Russell Crowe, the cast of “The Pope’s Exorcist” includes Daniel Zovatto (“It Follows”), Alex Essoe (“Midnight Mass”), Franco Nero (“Letters to Juliet”), Cornell John (“EastEnders”), and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, in his feature film debut. The screenplay was written by Michael Petroni (“The Book Thief”) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (“The Unholy”).

“The Pope’s Exorcist” originally premiered in theaters in April and grossed over $75 million at the global box office. In an exciting development, it was reported by Bloody Disgusting that a sequel to the film is already in the works, with expectations of Crowe returning as Father Amorth.
