German travel portal Travelcircus in October published data from its traditional study of small German cities – urban communities with a population of 5,000 to 20,000 people. Many of these small towns have perfectly preserved their historical appearance and are popular among foreign and German tourists.

The study is carried out at the end of the main season based on the analysis of publications on the social network Instagram – statistics of geographical hashtags. Having collected this data, the authors create a ranking of the most frequently mentioned small German cities – the places whose photographs are most often published on this platform.

Rounding out the top twenty for 2023, the medieval city of Mayen in the Eifel region collected almost 90 thousand posts. The permanent leader of the list is Bavarian Fussen – more than 340 thousand. Winterberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber are in the top three – about 300 thousand and 215 thousand, respectively.

Topping the list is the Bavarian city of Fussen, located near the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Visitors to this attraction often tag their posts with the additional hashtag #füssen or #fuessen, giving this undeniably picturesque neighboring town a significant head start.

Winterberg, firmly in second place, is a very popular winter resort that does not suffer from a lack of guests in other seasons. People like to come here in the summer to relax in nature or ride bicycles along the local forest paths and hilly landscapes.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber can easily be called one of the most beautiful ancient German cities that has preserved its historical appearance – in particular, the medieval wall with a length of almost 3,500 meters. You can climb the wall and take a walk – in this way you can walk around about two-thirds of the city.
