The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (Spain) has started the tender procedure for the contract to develop the infrastructure for the electrical connection of ships to shore in the first alignment of the Poniente docks of the port of Alcudia.

The main objective of this project is to reduce polluting emissions, especially from ferries docked in the port of Alcudia. It focuses specifically on Grimaldi’s ‘Volcán del Teide’ ferry, currently in service in the port area.

The infrastructure will allow the deployment and validation of the electrical energy supply for the ferries, which will enable them to turn off their auxiliary generators during their stay in port and consume electrical energy of renewable origin from the port’s electrical distribution network.

With the planned actions, it is estimated that a total annual energy demand of 20,391 MWh can be supplied in the first three years. Those responsible for the Balearic port system expect a gradual increase as more ships are incorporated into the electricity supply.

Currently, in docks without electricity supply, consumption must be provided by the ships’ auxiliary generators. However, by connecting to an electrical supply from the dock, CO2 emissions associated with the generators are avoided and the electrical energy from the port network is used directly.

Furthermore, by using electrical energy from renewable sources, as will be the case in all the planned actions, it is estimated that CO2 emissions in the supply will be practically zero, according to the Port Authority.

The works, with a completion period of nine months, have a base bidding budget of 3,204,845.87 euros and an estimated contract value of 2,648,632.95 euros.
