The Port of Algeciras has moved during the first month of 2023 a traffic of 8.7 million tons of merchandise, 50,000 of them by train, 0.5% of the monthly traffic.

The 50,000 tons that have been mobilized by train, of the total figure for January 2023, have had as their main destinations and origin Madrid Abroñigal and Coslada, Azuqueca de Henares in Guadalajara, Zaragoza, Barcelona and Marín.
The Port of Algeciras aims to double its railway capacity by 2025, for which it has the support of the European Union, (see news) which will promote the improvement of the Algeciras-Bobadilla network, declared a priority in the Trans-European Transport Network .
In July 2022, it presented the main planned actions, including works outside the premises such as auxiliary technical facilities to carry out operations and formations of freight trains of up to 750 meters. To them is added, within the enclosure, the extension of the Isla Verde Exterior railway terminal (see news). Regarding the evolution of traffic, in October last year it reached the best record with 121 freight convoys, and for the first time it had more than a thousand trains operated in one year (see news).
