The Port of Bilbao begins the electrification of quay A-5

The Bilbao Port Authority (spain) has taken the first steps to electrify the A-5 pier, an initiative that forms part of its energy transition plan. And it is that, the Vizcaya enclosure considers that the shutdown of the auxiliary generators of the ships during their stay in port is a good measure to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. However, for this you need to install a supply of electrical energy from the distribution network and that this is a renewable source.

At the moment, the installation of four connection points has been approved in the A-5 pier of the central pier of the basin, so that the vessels that arrive at said pier can receive electricity from the distribution network of the facilities port.

The A-5 pier is still in the pre-exploitation phase, so the type of traffic to operate has not been specifically established. Even so, a container terminal is being projected, so this future facility must be planned to be capable of offering a wide variety of services designed for all types of ships that may access said dock in the near future.

While, in the subsequent phase, the bidding and contracting of other related projects has been planned, such as various electricity generation facilities through photovoltaic panels, in such a way as to ensure that part of the energy consumed by the connected vessels comes from renewable.

Currently, the Biscayan enclave has started the bidding process for the drafting of the construction project and execution of the works of the construction project of the electrical supply to the ship in the A-5 quay. The works have an execution period of 56 months, a bidding base budget of 6,492,416.26 euros and an estimated contract value of 5,424,353.27 euros.

On the other hand, the Port of Bilbao is submerged in a traffic reordering project due to the construction of the central breakwater, the activity of which involves installing a new ro-ro ramp capable of managing future traffic on this dock.
