The Port Authority of Castellón (spain) has supported the COBS project, Container Overboard System, which is part of the Ports 4.0 IDEAS Program. It is an open corporate innovation model adopted by Puertos del Estado and the Port Authorities.

The main objective of the COBS initiative is to reduce the impact caused by the loss of containers at sea. For this, a system has been created that facilitates alerting and tracking of containers that fall overboard, as well as their ability to stay afloat for later rescue.

After successfully completing the proof of concept, COBS has reached the TRL3 level of technological maturity. The results of this test demonstrate the viability of the buoyancy system and the technologies used for the alert and location system, which translates into a greater overall feasibility of the project. Furthermore, progress has been made in the development of the business model, entering into agreements with different relevant companies in the maritime traceability systems sector in order to extend the capabilities of the devices and thus use them for other purposes.

The Port of Castellón has played an important role as a facilitating agent for the project, providing technical and business advice, and facilitating access to the port community and private agents who have a direct interest in this project.

Apart from these improvements, it is worth mentioning that the Port of Castellón has recently received a total of seven offers to carry out the execution of twenty dust-trap screen modules in plot B1 of the south basin of the port area. This is an initiative that takes care of the environment in bulk operations.
