The Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao (Spain) is in the completion and adaptation phase of the previous Chamber of Commerce building in the Outer Port. Through this action, they advance their purpose of rehabilitating the buildings currently in a state of abandonment to open them to the port community.

The property has an area of 3,000 square meters, spread over the ground floor and two upper levels, each with 1,000 square meters. It will be equipped with areas for offices and administrative functions, an auditorium, a space for training activities and an area dedicated to events, as well as a restaurant area.

The organization of spaces is carried out by grouping compatible and complementary uses in a functional design that optimizes the layout of the building. The works, which began in February, are expected to be completed in December of this year.

This building, located in Caneliñas, was started by the Chamber of Commerce in 2009 with the purpose of establishing a center for varied uses and logistics services. However, the dissolution of the chamber’s body interrupted the completion of the work, and in 2015, the building, still unfinished, was transferred to the Port Authority. After years of inactivity, the decision was made to give value to this space and finish the construction to allow its opening.

This initiative will provide new services to the Outer Port of Ferrol, taking advantage of the existing heritage and avoiding further deterioration of the building. The works have been awarded to Comsa-Ogmios Proyecto and have an investment of close to 2.6 million euros.

The part already built at the time has been maintained, including the foundation, the structure, the roof and the finish of the façade, making improvements in the areas that showed the most deterioration. In addition, the necessary works are being carried out to enable the building as a versatile, multi-use space. The second phase of the project will include the urbanization of the external environment, where green areas, parking lots and charging stations for electric vehicles will be created.

Apart from these improvements, the Port of Ferrol has begun the procedures for the construction of its first green hydrogen station, with the aim of becoming one of the main centers of green energy in the Spanish port system.
