The II Conference on environmental sustainability and port management of the Port of Huelva (Spain) have concluded, bringing together more than 40 environmental experts and port industry leaders to discuss current challenges and opportunities.

In this event, organized in collaboration with the Technical Association of Ports and Coasts and with the support of State Ports, the importance of transversality and digitalization was highlighted in the search for a sustainable future in port management.

Regarding transversality, it was highlighted that sustainability has become a crucial competitiveness factor in all aspects of economic and social development. In addition, the fundamental role of digitalization in sustainable decision-making was highlighted, by allowing data collection and scenario simulation for conscious decision-making.

Another relevant topic discussed was the importance of public-private collaboration in the creation of energy and industrial clusters in ports. In addition, the challenges and opportunities related to reducing emissions, adapting to climate change, protecting biodiversity and promoting the circular economy in ports were analyzed. Specific projects were presented, such as green hydrogen, the electrification of docks and the reduction of the water footprint.

Challenges in the Energy Transition and Port Infrastructure

In the context of the energy transition, several key challenges were identified, including the need to achieve emissions reduction targets in all sectors, the development of renewable energy sources with high capacity and competitive costs, as well as the adaptation of ports and ships to these new technologies.

It is essential to evaluate projects from the perspective of their contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Biodiversity also plays an essential role in the environmental sustainability of ports, and the need to understand and protect ecosystems in a coherent way was highlighted.

Port infrastructure must evolve towards resilience and decarbonization. This involves the design of facilities that can withstand climate challenges and the incorporation of materials and technologies that reduce emissions.

In terms of environmental quality, an important challenge is to move towards facilities and infrastructure that encourage the reuse of natural resources. It is also essential to guarantee the legal and environmental security of the land available for future uses.

As part of its commitment to the environment, the contracting table of the Port of Huelva has recently proposed that Sociedad Ibérica de Construcciones Eléctricas, Sice, be awarded the contract to carry out the works related to the energy efficiency improvement project at the facilities. from the South Pier.
