The Port Authority of Melilla (Spain) has made the decision to award the contract related to the technical assistance necessary for the development of the project for a dock for deep-draft vessels. The company awarded this contract is Specialized Civil and Industrial Works Engineering, and the amount amounts to 171,579.02 euros.

It is important to highlight that the Madrid-based company initially presented an appeal that was finally accepted and considered. This appeal was against the agreement to award the contract to the temporary union of companies composed of Neos Maritime and BTP, an agreement that had been reached in March.

To date, the port of Melilla was limited by docks with a maximum length of 300 meters, which is insufficient to accommodate large vessels. Taking into account the growing trend of increasingly larger vessels, the construction of an infrastructure that allows the docking of these vessels has been planned.

Those responsible for the port of Melilla plan for the new dock to begin at the marina’s breakwater, located within the main dock of the port of Melilla. It is estimated that the length of the pier will be approximately 400 meters.

It is worth mentioning that the contracted service covers all the assistance required for the correct preparation of the project, which involves carrying out a prior study that contemplates alternatives for location, orientation and configuration, in addition to the preparation of necessary reports until the project is approved by State Ports.

To carry out this technical assistance, three work stages have been defined with an execution period of eight months. Specifically, the stages include the collection and analysis of basic information, the exploration of alternatives in terms of location, orientation and configuration, and finally, the drafting of the construction project of the definitive solution for the dock.

On the other hand, the Port of Melilla has recently awarded Ferrovial Construction the works to organize the security areas of the enclave and, specifically, the new customs area for an amount of 938,079.12 euros and with a completion period of six months. .
