The Port Authority of Motril (Spain), in collaboration with the Cuerva business group from Granada, has obtained the support of the European Union to carry out a project aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from ships that dock at its facilities.

This ambitious project has a budget of eight million euros and focuses on the generation of around three megawatts of energy through the installation of high-rise photovoltaic canopies on an area of 40,000 square meters, which will serve as pre-shipment for the regular maritime lines with North Africa.

The energy produced will not only be used to decarbonize shipping, but also to reduce the energy costs of companies operating in the port today and those established in the future. Costs are expected to be lower than market prices.

In addition, the project includes the storage of excess solar energy, thus avoiding the need to pour it into the electrical grid. Those responsible for the Andalusian enclave have announced that the necessary plans are already being drawn up to carry out this initiative and the construction phase is expected to begin before 2025.

It is worth mentioning that this project is part of the vision of turning the port into an “energy island” with the aim of improving systems management and, ultimately, reducing production costs, as part of a more sustainable plan. extensive promoted by the Port Authority of Motril.

The port area also takes into account the fact that the European Union has established the mandatory nature of electrical connection in port for all ro-pax, ferries and ro-ro ships, and this regulation will be extended to cruise ships by the year 2050. .

In addition to improving the quality of its services, the commission made up of the Port of Motril and the town’s City Council recently met to evaluate the progress of the current cruise campaign and to design strategies to promote the next season.
