Representatives of the Santander Port Authority (Spain) and Renault Group in the Iberian Peninsula have met with the purpose of analyzing the company’s prospects in the Port of Santander for this year and evaluating the improvement of port infrastructure for vehicle traffic.

At the meeting, the strategic importance of vehicle traffic was highlighted, advocating for “active listening” to understand the needs of the sector. Currently, Renault Group represents 33.3% of vehicle traffic in Santander, and steps have been outlined to improve daily operations, seeking greater efficiency in a safe environment.

The Cantabrian enclave pursues this efficiency through “significant investments” both ongoing and future in the port, with the aim of increasing the capacity of the facilities. Notable projects include the expansion of the car silo, tripling its space, and the commissioning of the Raos 9 dock, which will provide more docking lines for road traffic and increase the logistics surface.

Regarding vehicle traffic, it was reported that the port of Santander occupied first place in the ranking of the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers, Anfac, last year. The port’s automobile terminal has experienced sustained growth over the last 25 years, handling almost nine million vehicles.

In 2023, the volume of vehicles moved through the port experienced a growth of 18.5%, reaching 342,021 units transported. The use of rail to transport vehicles is also highlighted, a logistics practice appreciated by manufacturers that contributes to reducing the carbon footprint in the distribution chain.

Another movement that favors the port activity of the Santander enclave involves the recent approval of a concession that extends for 1,000 m² on the northern breakwater from Raos to Noatum Terminal Polivalente.
