The Santander Port Authority (Spain) and the city council of the Cantabrian capital have revealed an exciting joint project that aims to evaluate the impact of cruise activity in the city and throughout the region. In order to involve the port and tourism sector in this initiative, the results of the study will be presented at the Fitur holidaywhich will take place in Madrid in January 2024.
Highlighting the opportunity to boost cruise traffic, especially after the industry’s recovery from the Covid-19 crisis, the Port Authority highlights the strategic role of the port of Santander. It has new facilities and the recent remodeling of the maritime terminal, positioning itself favorably as a specialized infrastructure in the heart of the urban area.
According to the information provided by the organization, it is projected that in 2023 the number of cruise passengers worldwide will exceed 30 million. In this context, Santander is presented as an attractive destination for this growing demand.
From the council, the increase in cruise passengers is emphasized as an indicator of tourist attractiveness and the effectiveness of regional strategies. In addition, the opportunity to deseasonalize tourism by attracting cruises throughout the year is highlighted.
Likewise, the actions of Santander Cruise Deluxe are highlighted, which seek to attract cruise tourism, promoting commercial, gastronomic and tourist development. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of analyzing the sector and consolidating in a single document the opportunities for the city, the region and the port in terms of cruise tourism.
Finally, another objective is to ensure that Santander and Cantabria continue to be attractive destinations for cruise passengers.
