The Port Authority of Tarragona (Spain) has begun its supervision flights using drones starting this Wednesday. The first pilots certified for these tasks have used the devices acquired a few months ago to carry out these flights, which will contribute to strengthening security at their facilities.

The port acquired two units in the month of May, which have different and complementary characteristics. The largest drone is the ‘Mavic 300 RTK’, which is equipped with high-definition and infrared vision cameras, in addition to having a thermal camera and the most recent technology in control and command systems.

The second drone is the ‘Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced’. In this case, it is a more compact and versatile drone, which has a high-definition visual camera, thermal camera, spotlight and speaker, in addition to incorporating the most advanced technology in control and command systems.

Additionally, the port is in the process of preparing the tender for the acquisition of a gas detector for the ‘Mavic 300 RTK’, as well as the incorporation of a new drone to strengthen the tasks of the port police.

According to what was reported by the port entity, a total of seven members of the Port Police have completed courses of more than 100 hours of training with the aim of carrying out supervision tasks using drones within the facilities.

The Port Authority takes a significant step in terms of security, since drones will be of great help to assess risks, keep the perimeter under control, inspect difficult-to-access outdoor areas and carry out active and passive supervision, allowing the detection of risks and threats. Likewise, emergency management will be facilitated in a more effective, efficient and safe manner.

This effort by the port of Tarragona to improve information processes and decision-making in crisis situations is reflected in its status as the only port in the state that has ISO 22320 Emergency Management certification.

In addition to improving its services, the Catalan enclave stands out for receiving special loads. For example, the Port of Tarragona has carried out an impressive loading operation that involved a total of 164 pieces, with a combined weight of 243 tons. These pieces are part of a set of walkways designed for the boarding and disembarking of passengers on ships, with their final destination in the Port of Nador (Morocco).
