The hiring table of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain) has proposed the award of the contract to carry out assistance tasks in measuring and reducing its carbon footprint for the years 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 to the Tecnalia Research & Innovation Foundation. The contract has a value of 44,800 euros.

Those responsible for the Tenerife ports emphasize the need to develop effective strategies to reduce the carbon footprint in the Port Authorities. They highlight the importance of having an instrument for calculating and managing the carbon footprint adapted to the singularities of port activity, which includes maritime and land logistics chains, as well as logistical and industrial activities of port communities.

In accordance with the State Ports methodological guide for calculating the carbon footprint in ports, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife plans to implement a system for measuring direct or indirect emissions from sources that depend directly on the organization.

To facilitate the incorporation of information system solutions that simplify carbon footprint measurements, the scope of work will include a study of the sources and structure of the original data. In addition, intermediate calculation procedures will be provided with the aim of automating future carbon footprint measurements as far as possible.

Assistance will cover the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Granadilla, Los Cristianos, Santa Cruz de La Palma, San Sebastián de La Gomera and La Estaca on the island of El Hierro.

Another project that the Port of Tenerife has in hand is the investment of a total of 269 million euros in its facilities until 2027, focusing above all on the construction of the port of Granadilla and on completing the operation of the link dock through a inter-administrative agreement to guarantee its financing.
