The Boluda Maritime Terminals facilities located in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (spain) have received this week the first call of the ‘Gran Antwerp’, the first G5 class vessel of the Grimaldi Group, coming from Casablanca, which has picked up transshipment containerized cargo bound for the Port of Cotonou.

The vessel, which sails under the Italian flag, is 38 meters wide and 250 meters long. In addition, it is capable of moving 4,700 linear meters of rolled cargo, 2,500 cars and 2,000 TEUs.

Another detail to mention is that the ship integrates the necessary facilities to connect to electrical outlets while it remains docked, for which Grimaldi expects to reduce its polluting emissions by 43% compared to other previous models.

In this sense, the Tenerife Port Authority has already drawn up the project to offer electricity to container ships in the terminals of the Dique del Este and expects to launch a tender at the end of this year, with an investment of twelve million euros.

For its part, Grimaldi has been expanding the variety of its international transit calls in the Tenerife port and the volume of goods moved since 2019, so that the transalpine operator has gone from 120,321 tons in 2019 to 268,612 tons in 2022.

It is worth mentioning that the Grimaldi Group has planned to cover the automotive demand with a new order for two ships ‘Pure Car Truck Carrier’, PCTC, thus extending the contract with the Chinese shipyards Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company Limited and China Shipbuilding Trading Company Limited to the construction of five ships of these characteristics.
