During the month of September, the Port of Valencia (Spain) has continued to show solid performance, with a total of 6,294,649 tons of merchandise moved, which represents an increase of 2.09% compared to the previous year.

It is relevant to highlight that for the fourth consecutive month, a stabilization is observed in the total volume of merchandise managed in the Valencian facilities. This period is characterized by a significant increase of 7.76% in imports, despite a moderate decrease of 4.46% in the number of containers managed, with a total of 385,830 TEUs compared to 403,843 TEUs the previous year. .

Furthermore, the non-containerized general merchandise sector has also seen a solid annual growth of 14.47%, while containerized merchandise has shown an increase of 0.38%. However, the tons of bulk handled from Valencian docks have decreased by 8.97% compared to September 2022.

Freight transport by train continues to rise, accumulating a total of 176,768 TEUs in the first nine months of the year, which is equivalent to an annual increase of 6.9%. Furthermore, the number of vehicles transported by rail has experienced an annual increase of 267.23%.

Ro-ro traffic has also shown notable growth, with an increase of 15.65% annually in September, reaching 51,221 units and a total of 10,051,754 tons transported, which represents an increase of 1.71% compared to with the same month of 2022. Regarding the movement of automobiles, between January and September 476,405 units have been handled, which represents an increase of 18.62%.

Regarding traffic areas, links with the Far East region remain stable, and the number of containers managed from January to September has reached 585,177 TEUs, which is equivalent to an increase of 0.67% annually. In this sense, China is positioned as the port’s main trading partner in 2023, with the management of 413,445 containers, closely followed by the United States with 269,353.

On the other hand, the Valencian enclave has recently indicated that it aims to accelerate the northern expansion of its facilities under the leadership of its new president, Mar Chao. During a recent public appearance, Chao reiterated the legality of all technical procedures that have preceded the final approval of the northern expansion project.
