The Portuguese president promulgates the criminalization of conversion therapies for LGTB+ people

The Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousapromulgated this Saturday the decree that prohibits forced conversion therapies for LGTB+ people in Portugal and punishes these practices with prison sentences and fines, the Presidency of the Republic reported in a statement.

The final document establishes sentences of up to three years of prison or fines for those who subject another person to this type of treatment, “including the performance or promotion of medical-surgical procedures, or practices with pharmacological, psychotherapeutic or other psychological or behavioral resources.”

Whoever imposes “irreversible modifications” in the force you can receive a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Additionally, those convicted of these crimes may be prohibit practicing the profession or activities that involve habitual contact with minors for a period that can reach 20 years.

To the condemned also You may be prohibited from having a minor in your care.in cases such as adoptions, guardianships, foster care and civil sponsorships, among other circumstances.

The punishments will be aggravated if they are carried out by two or more peopleif the victim is a minor or if those affected are particularly vulnerable people, among other conditions.

The decree establishes that, one year after the entry into force of this law, the Government must carry out a study on the impact of the application of the standard.

The document was approved by the Portuguese Parliament in December with the votes in favor of the Socialist Party, Liberal Initiative, the Communist Party, the Left Bloc, the animalist PAN and Livre (left).
