It is Thursday, September 12las streets of Quetzaltenango were filled with music, joy and color during the traditional Xelafer 2024 pre-primary school parade. The parades, some of the most anticipated within the festivities of the Central American Independence Faircelebrate both the 203 years of the Independence of Guatemala like the 140th anniversary of the fair, which was held for the first time in 1884.
The pre-primary parade started at Benito Juárez Park, and around 2,900 boys and girls, between 4 and 6 years old, from 38 educational centers in Quetzaltenango, participated in this colorful activity. The children marched to the rhythm of melodies they themselves performed. With their uniforms and costumes, the children became the protagonists of the day, while Quetzaltecos took to the streets to witness the activity.
The Central American Independence Fair is a major event in Quetzaltenango, and its activities, which extend over several days, include concerts, parades and other cultural activities.

The images of the Xelafer 2024 preschool parade are a true example of the creativity and talent of the young participants. Every year, the streets are filled with costumes and themed outfits that captivate spectators. This year was no exception, as boys and girls could be seen wearing astronaut costumes, while others opted for more traditional designs, proudly wearing their band uniforms. A group that celebrated the achievements of renowned Quetzaltecan athletes, such as Carlos Argueta and Bárbara Schoenfeld, also stood out, carrying signs or bands with their names and sports disciplines.
Another group of children recreated a little train in honor of the historic Ferrocarril de los Altos, while others formed a small carousel. Also, a special participation was that of the School Band of the Educational Center for Deaf Children of the Western Region “Doctora HC Elisa Molina de Stahl”, who joined the celebration, highlighting their skills.

Xelafer 2024 still has several important events ahead. On September 13, the Xelafer 2024 will take place. Desfile Multiculturalwhich will also start from Benito Juárez Park and end at the Tecún Umán Roundabout.
