DECRYPTION – Last year, two violent waves of bird flu decimated farms in the West.

“I just put ducks back in two buildings, hope I didn’t do something stupid.”Like all poultry farmers in the Pays de la Loire or New Aquitaine, Louis-Marie Pasquier walks on eggshells, after having relaunched his production of chickens, turkeys and roast ducks in the spring.

In these regions hit twice (in the spring and then in the fall of 2022) by violent waves of avian influenza, poultry production has resumed slowly since mid-April. And since May 15 for ducks, the species most sensitive to this virus which has been decimating French farms for a decade.

In fact, the disease and its clinical signs are almost undetectable on waterfowl for almost eight days, whereas it is much faster for other species. Result ; when the duck dies, the virus is already out of control.
