Saturday August 19, the prefecture of the Gironde alert on a “risk to the currents of baïnes” on all the Gironde coast. Swimmers are urged to exercise “the greatest caution”, as the month of August has already recorded two fatal drownings. Baïnes are feared by bathers at sea. They generally take swimmers by surprise, between the beach and sandbanks, a very strong current carrying them out to sea. The prefecture of Charente-Maritime has also urged swimmers in the region to be careful on beaches near the island of Oléron.

“Swimmers and practitioners of a nautical activity who frequent the beaches are called upon to exercise the greatest caution”, indicated the prefecture of Gironde. The prefecture of Charente-Maritime also called on swimmers to “the greatest vigilance” on beaches in the south of the department and on the island of Oléron, marked by “sea currents which can be dangerous”.
