On the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater in Baku, the premiere of the play “Woyzeck” based on the play of the same name by the German poet and playwright Georg Büchner was held with great success, Day.Az reports. The production director of the play was Alexander Sharovsky.

Each new directorial work of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Alexander Sharovsky arouses great interest and attracts the attention of both artists and theatergoers. This was the case at the premiere of the production “Woyzeck”.

The drama is based on a real event – a criminal case of murder that occurred on June 26, 1821. This is a psychedelic drama about an ordinary soldier, tortured by military drill and medical experiments, who loses his sanity and begins to experience strange visions. The production demonstrates how gradually, under the influence of failure and hunger, an uncontrollable desire to kill appears in the mind of a little man. Before us unfolds the tragedy of a man with a pure spiritual essence, which, under the influence of circumstances and cruel reality, is realized in a crime – Woyzeck (Rufat Aliyev) kills his wife Maria (Olga Arsentyeva).

The viewer has many questions; the audience, along with the main character, finds themselves in a labyrinth of thoughts about the nature of human cruelty and helplessness, about how one mistake can lead to an irreparable tragedy, about how much pain we sometimes hide in our souls… Looking at Woyzeck, I want to take him out of this crazy world. But will it work? Or, by picking up a knife, he puts an end to his existence…

Alexander Sharovsky had long wanted to stage this performance and did it amazingly – the audience was touched to the depths of the soul by the sad, tragic, cruel story… And how many new directorial techniques, how many interesting ideas Sharovsky used in this work. The performance needs to be seen, felt, lived…

Rufat Aliyev and Olga Arsentyeva conveyed the excruciating pain of their characters, the tragedy that befell their heroes. They did their job perfectly.

The production was greeted with thunderous applause, and after the curtain fell and the spotlights went out, the audience did not leave for a long time, discussing and sharing their impressions.

Honored artists of Azerbaijan Timur Rahimov and Murad Mamedov, theater artists Rufat Aliyev, Olga Arsentieva, Rufat Nazarov, Ramil Aliyev, Tamerlan Abdullayev, Fatima Aliyeva, Marina Litvinenko, Nadir Abduragimbekov, Zaur Teregulov, Farid Bakhramov, Zaur Iskenderov, Dilyara Nazarova were engaged in the performance.
