Buckingham Palace has announced that a new headstone, which includes the names of Queen Elizabeth II, her husband Prince Philip and her parents, has been placed on the grave where she was buried this week in the chapel of Windsor Castle.

The Queen’s coffin, and that of Prince Philip, who died last year, were interred on Monday evening in the King George VI Chapel of Remembrance, a wing inside St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

So far the tombstone in the chapel has only mentioned the names of the queen’s parents. But now there is a new tablet stone on which is written simply: “George VI 1895-1952”, “Elizabeth 1900-2002”, “Elizabeth II 1926-2022” and “Philip 1921-2021”.

The names of the two couples are separated by a single garter star made of metal, the symbol of the Order of the Garter, the oldest order of chivalry in the country to which the family members belonged.

While the United Kingdom ended national mourning on Tuesday, family members began their own week of mourning. Next Thursday, Windsor Castle will be reopened for visits, including to St. George’s Church, and for the first time the public will be able to view the new tomb in the Queen’s Family Chapel.

Meanwhile, the “Daily Mail” reported yesterday that King Charles III wants his official coronation ceremony to be “shorter, smaller and less expensive” than his mother’s lavish ceremony in 1953, to present the new look of the royal house in the new era.
