“The president will submit those contracts to the Seimas for denunciation in the near future,” Ridas Jasiulionis, adviser to the country’s leader, told LRT.lt.

As the portal announces, the Government’s decision to denounce the investment promotion and protection agreements with Russia and Belarus was made on May 22. The spring session of the Seimas lasted until July 18, and two extraordinary sessions were held on August 13 and September 3.

Lithuania decided to terminate all possible bilateral international agreements with Russia and Belarus more than two years after these countries’ comprehensive aggression against Ukraine.

According to the currently valid agreements, Lithuania must protect Russian and Belarusian investments in the country, and if it does not do so, Russian and Belarusian companies can complain both to national Lithuanian courts and to international arbitration. In addition, the investment promotion and protection agreements with the aggressors oblige Lithuania to ensure transfers and investment-related money movement without restrictions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) entered the denunciation of these contracts into the work program of the autumn session of the Seimas.
