The Presidency has opened a call for applications to join the list of candidates for the Office of the Attorney General

President Gustavo Petro opened the call to select one of the candidates that will form the list from which the Senate will elect the next Attorney General.

This call is an invitation to all Colombians who meet the constitutional and legal requirements to apply for this position of high responsibility.

The Presidency has extended the invitation to professionals who meet the criteria established in Decree Law 262 of 2000 and in articles 232, 276 and 280 of the Political Constitution.

These requirements include being Colombian by birth, possessing a law degree, and not having been sentenced to a prison sentence. In addition, Applicants must have a minimum of fifteen years’ experience in the Judicial Branchthe Public Prosecutor’s Office, the practice of law, or university teaching in legal disciplines.

The selection process is thorough and transparent, seeking to ensure that only the most qualified reach the final stage.

Those interested must send their resume before August 27 at 4:00 pm, when the application period will close.. From there, President Petro will evaluate each candidacy to create a preliminary list from which he will select a candidate to be included in the shortlist that will be presented to the Senate.

The election of the new Attorney General will not only define the direction of the Attorney General’s Office for the period 2025-2029, but will also mark the end of the administration of Margarita Cabello, who has been a figure of constant controversy in her relationship with the current government.
