Economic neocolonialism in Africa: The role of the IMF and the World Bank. Diplomatic meeting in Burundi between President Ndayishimiye and the IMF Representative
Gitega (Muramvya), 25/10/2023 – As part of Burundi’s foreign policy and its links with the GUAN [1]a meeting took place at the tourist site of l’enclos du Mwami à Muramvya. His Excellency Ndayishimiye Evariste, Major General and President of Burundireceived in audience the Frenchman Mr. Delepierre Samuel, representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Burundi. Discussions focused on development cooperation between the IMF and Burundi.
Burundian decolonial activists expressed their disapproval of this visita French leader on a sacred place of our ancestors. They consider the IMF, like the World Bank, as neocolonial instruments intended to maintain ties of dependence with the West, through the market economy.
In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, the IMF and World Bank encouraged African countries to privatize their assets by selling them to Westerners. From 1989, these institutions became financial tools of GUAN, aiming to ensure that the resources of African countries remained in the hands of Western multinationals, mainly American.
Burundian decolonial activists firmly disapprove of Burundian policy towards GUAN undertaken since 2022. Today, an anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist alternative exists, that of the BRICS.
