Finnish President Alexander Stubb supported the government’s decision to permanently close road checkpoints on the border with Russia, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“The decision to keep the eastern border closed is the right decision,” Stubb said in a traditional interview with Yle TV on Saturday.

He noted that the border is closed to prevent the refugee situation from becoming uncontrollable, and the government’s actions helped avoid chaos.

On April 4, the Cabinet of Ministers of Finland decided to permanently close the checkpoints on the border with Russia, which have been closed since the end of November 2023 due, according to the Finnish authorities, to the uncontrolled arrival of refugees.

As previously reported by Finnish media, checkpoints on the border with Russia will be closed until Finland adopts a law on temporary measures to combat so-called instrumental migration (when refugees are allegedly used as a way to achieve certain goals), allowing to refuse shelter right on the border. The bill is expected to go to parliament in April.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, previously stated that Finland’s decision to close border crossings creates new dividing lines in Europe, and Moscow’s response to these actions will be worked out in an interdepartmental format.
