The president of the Spanish Hospitality Business Confederation (CEHE), José Luis Yzuel, has raised a storm in the public debate after indicating that working more than ten hours “is not bad because in high temporality you have to take advantage.” On the second day of the conference organized by the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises, held this week, where the challenges of vacancies in Spain are analyzed, the representative of hoteliers stated, after putting his hands on his head , that “all my life in hospitality we have worked part-time, from 12 to 12.”

Participants in the session concluded that the lack of labor is holding back the growth of the private sector. Likewise, Yzuel criticized that the young population “no longer goes to work,” and ironically said that the new generations complain about working conditions. “We are seeing it everywhere: teleworking, millennials, generation z,” he insisted during his presentation. «Working a split shift, working on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays…the hours! It’s been ten hours, damn it! What a pain, if all our lives we have worked part-time in hospitality! », he indicated ironically in his turn to speak.

He also stated that working more than ten hours “is not bad because in high season you have to take advantage,” although he added that this does not mean “that they are not paid, that they are not compensated, because there are many people willing to receive a bonus.” great and then have two months of vacation instead of one.

After the controversy generated, Yzuel himself published a video through the CEHE social network in which he apologized for these comments. “I am sorry for a joke, within a context in which we were talking about the seriousness of the job,” he indicated. “I’m sorry I made a mistake by making a joke about such a serious topic,” he insisted to apologize.

The acting second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, also responded on the networks indicating that “labor rights are there to be fulfilled.” She described Yzuel’s statements as “intolerable” and added that “in 1919 the 8-hour day was achieved, which must continue to be reduced and, however, there are those who still remain in the past.”
