The President’s Cake: Iraq Comedy for Kids

On April 26 in the early 1990s, Iraq, in full turmoil, was counting down the days that separated it from a national event: the birthday of President Saddam Hussein. The whole country must celebrate it in unison, especially by making cakes. For the most modest schoolchildren, the great honor of bringing one back to class goes hand in hand with anxiety: how will the family be able to buy the ingredients? The draw carried out by the teacher of a school in southern Iraq grants the privilege of preparing dessert to Lamia, 9 years old.
