Between August 2021 and August 2022, the price of bread jumped by 18% on average within the European Union. This is revealed by the figures published by the European statistics agency Eurostat. By way of comparison, the previous year the increase was only 3%.
A limited increase In France so far
Depending on the country, the situation is very different. Thus, the most substantial increase is on the side of Hungary with an average price of bread which has climbed by 66%. On the podium, we also find Lithuania (33%) and Estonia (32%).
Conversely, the increase is less significant in Luxembourg (10%), in the Netherlands (10%). In France, this surge in bread prices was contained to 8%. Despite this, professionals in this sector in France do not hide their concerns about the risk of a significant price increase.
A rise in the price of raw materials and energy
Eurostat links these increases to the war in Ukraine “which significantly disrupted world markets, as Russia and Ukraine were major exporters of cereals, wheat, corn, oilseeds (especially sunflower) and fertilizers “.
On top of that, an explosion in energy costs is superimposed. Thus, some specialists predict a future increase of 20 to 30% in the price of bread in France.
