This year, until July 11, 110 hours were recorded when the price of electricity on the stock exchange in the price zone of Latvia was equal to zero or negative. Reinis Āboltiņš, the energy expert of the Public Service Regulatory Commission (SPRK), explains such price dynamics with the availability of more solar power plants (SES) in Latvia and the Baltic States as a whole, as negative prices are typically set in the middle of the day, usually between 10:00 and 18:00. Last year, the average price in the hours when it was equal to zero or negative was -3.12 euros/MWh, this year it is -1.76 euros/MWh.
The upward trend in zero or negative price hours is expected to continue as new SES capacity is installed and brought to market. R. Āboltiņš notes that the market in the Baltic States as a whole, and especially in Latvia, is not saturated, therefore the interest of industry players and investors to invest in new renewable capacity, but especially in the development of SES, will not decrease in the future.

However, solar has a much more concentrated production time than wind. For example, in Germany last year, approximately 80% of all solar energy production was concentrated in only 20% of the hours. For wind energy, 80% were carried out for 50% of the hours. The reason, of course, is that the wind can blow in summer, winter, night and day.
