Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to China tomorrow Monday (July 8) on a four-day visit. He is going to China after 10 years.

He will attend a business forum in Beijing on Tuesday (July 9). Bangabandhu will sit in an official meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang next Wednesday. The meeting will focus on issues such as financial assistance and funding for new projects. Later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Several documents are scheduled to be signed with the country during the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing. Besides, he will unveil the Chinese translation of Bangabandhu’s book ‘Amar Deha Nayachin’.

According to diplomatic sources, the visit is considered important considering the ongoing turmoil and geopolitical situation in the Middle East due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israeli attack on Gaza.

Sources also said that preparations have already been made to sign 12 agreements and memorandums of understanding. Among them, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed regarding the supply of water information of the Brahmaputra river. According to the agreement, China will forecast the Brahmaputra river during the monsoon season to control floods in Bangladesh. Because half of Brahmaputra river is in China. The other half is in Bangladesh and India. There is a risk of flooding in the country due to upstream water. Preparations can be made to deal with floods by getting China’s forecast. Under trade assistance and budget support from China, issues include credit, investment protection, digital economy, blue economy, announcement of free trade agreement survey and construction and renovation of multiple bridges. China’s assistance will be sought in the integrated project undertaken by the government for the development of South Bengal in Bangladesh.

It should be noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Dhaka in September 2016. During that historic visit, 27 projects were decided to be implemented. Out of this, 15 projects have been completed, 6 are in progress and new projects are being considered to replace the remaining 6. It is known that Bangladesh mentioned some projects in the meeting of foreign secretaries of the two countries in Beijing at the beginning of this month, which China mentioned that can be taken into consideration. It has also been pointed out to China that it takes a lot of time to complete the project vetting, thereby ruining the feasibility of the project.
