Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke in favor of canceling direct elections to the European Parliament. He stated this in a conversation with ex-Chancellor of Austria Wolfgang Schussel, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“We must consider returning to the previous system, when national parliaments sent their representatives to the European Parliament instead of direct elections,” the newspaper Die Presse quoted the prime minister as saying.

The politician also called the structure itself a “madhouse.” “One of the reasons for our weakness is that today the European Parliament is not functioning,” he said.

In the conversation, Orbán also said that the “initiative” in the European Union must come from member states, “which means that [Европейский] The council must be more active, more decisive and ready for political action.”

Since 1979, parliament has been elected once every five years by direct universal suffrage; before that, it was formed by delegating deputies from national parliaments according to a quota established for each state.
