Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), announced today that he has decided to run for president of the country, Agerpress reported.
“I have decided to submit my candidacy for the presidency of Romania. I took this decision after consulting the Romanians, my family and my party colleagues. At the congress on Saturday I will present to the Romanians my plan for Romania and I will ask my colleagues their support to win the presidential election,” Cholaku said in a Facebook post.
He noted that Romania needs “more than ever” stability and balance.
“Romanians need the certainty that by working, they will be able to have a better life. The country needs a president who cares for all Romanians,” added Cholaku.
The SDP leader emphasized that he feels ready to take on the responsibility of being the president of all Romanians.
“I have never shied away from difficult things. I took over the presidency of the SDP at a very difficult time and together with my colleagues we managed to regain the trust of the people. I accepted the responsibility of being prime minister at one of the most difficult times in recent history. And we succeeded, together with my colleagues in the government, let’s put things in order. I am prepared to be the president of all Romanians. I believe that I can contribute to the future of my country – a future of security and prosperity!” , the leader of the Social Democrats also wrote, quoted by BTA.
The first round of the presidential elections in Romania is scheduled for November 24, and the second for December 8.
