The story has already been told many times and is now at the center of the Netflix docu-series directed by Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi
If the most interesting part of a docu-series is a fugitive in which Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy accuses King Juan Carlos of Spain of having killed his brother in an accident, it means that something has gone wrong. Santoro school journalism scoop? Professional impropriety? Advertising gimmick? Whatever the answer, it is already a judgment on “The Prince”, directed by Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi (Netflix).
It’s August 18, 1978. A group of boys from Rome are on holiday in Sardinia and decide to go on an excursion to Corsica, to the island of Cavallo where the Savoy family vacations in golden exile. The day-trippers behaved like “Italians” (according to the Savoys), they disturb and a rifle shot is fired from a boat where Prince Vittorio Emanuele was, hitting Dirk Hamer in the leg. Dirk will die following a months-long ordeal of operations, the prince will be acquitted by a French court. The story is still full of doubts and the Italian Cassation has established that the Savoy cannot make use of the right to be forgotten for the facts related to that accident.
The first episode is interesting because, thanks to her birthplace, her relationships, her use of the world, Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi manages to interview almost all the protagonists of the tragic evening, to reconstruct both the atmosphere of those summers, where there was still mass tourism, both the privileges that the Savoy enjoyed. The insistent close-up of her is far more expressive than the version of events she reels off.
The second and third installments are more journalistic, they would like to describe the facts, both from the point of view of Birgit Hamer, Dirk’s sister who sacrificed her whole life to ask for justice (she was a beautiful girl who during her best holiday youth had dragged behind), and from the point of view of Savoy. Suffice it to say that the journalist entrusted with most of the reconstruction is Gianni Barbacetto: the episodes change register and from the Monegasque or San Carlo allure they pass to folder journalism.
This story has already been told many times, Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi adds only one outburst.
