His Highness listened to an explanation about the components and elements of the project, watched a visual presentation of the projects, and made a field tour inside the city of Dammam in one of the project buses.
He stressed the importance of the public transport project by buses launched by the Eastern Region Municipality in cooperation with other service agencies, which aims to change the lifestyle, improve it and humanize the cities of the Eastern Region, pointing to the important role that the project will play in developing the traffic and economic aspects, in addition to other projects that seek to Contribute to achieving the goals of (Kingdom’s Vision 2030) by developing the infrastructure and economy in the region, unleashing its potential and competitive capabilities, and improving the investment environment and climate in it, appreciating the support of the wise leadership to launch such vital projects, especially the public transport project, which achieved success in its early experimental stages.
The public transport project by buses in the metropolis of Dammam, whose contract was signed with the Saudi Public Transport Company “SAPTCO” for a period of five years, and at a value of 149.6 million riyals, serves a network of different lines within the city of Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and Qatif, through scheduled and organized trips with a total distance of 400 km. km back and forth, for all routes, while the number of established stations reached 212 stations covering most of the attractions in the targeted cities and governorates, by providing 85 modern buses equipped with amenities and safety, and equipped to serve people with special needs, and the capacity of one bus is 81 passengers, and operates around the clock. 18 hours a day, from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm, seven days a week.
This service, which costs 3:45 riyals per trip, contributes to providing multiple transportation options for the residents and visitors of Dammam and Al-Qatif Governorate. It will also help facilitate movement within crowded central areas and points of attraction, and will reduce the extent of carbon emissions due to the frequent use of individual vehicles and energy consumption. Which, in turn, is reflected in the reduction and reduction of traffic congestion to achieve one of the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to improve the quality of life.
For his part, His Excellency the Mayor of the Eastern Region, Eng. Fahd Al-Jubeir, stated that the total number of passengers during the last experimental operational period amounted to 405,370 passengers, and the number of daily trips executed reached 936, at a rate of 52 per operating hour, and the daily distance traveled reached 30,800 km long. At a rate of 1.711 km / h, indicating that the Eastern Region Municipality aims through this project to provide safe, sustainable and effective transportation services that facilitate the movement of citizens, residents and visitors and reduce the problems of traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
He pointed out that the first and second phases of the trial operation of the public transport project by buses for the metropolis of Dammam and the Qatif Governorate, in which work began in the first phase of operation on the first of last October by the operator, pointing out that the second phase of the trial operation included receiving the beneficiaries of passengers on all The tracks for the project, as the stations and gathering points for passengers were finally identified on the tracks, and the locations of many stations were prepared, confirming the provision of various ways to pay the costs of transportation, through a mobile application for smart phones specially prepared for the project, through which the beneficiary allows booking tickets and knowing the routes Buses, as well as knowing the nearest bus to the beneficiary’s location, or through the prepaid card.
His Excellency emphasized the observance of the needs and requirements of universal access (people with disabilities). The buses also have electronic compressors at all doors to alert the driver when they get off. The buses have also been equipped with internal and external cameras to monitor the movement of passengers inside, traffic and pedestrians around the bus, and taking into account safety. With regard to stations, locations have been chosen. At the same time, His Highness the Emir of the Eastern Region inaugurated the Dammam Corniche development project on an area of 610,000 square meters, which includes 5 basic areas for families, celebrations, sports and recreation, in addition to a public square and an area for cultural events, and a project to develop three main entrances to the metropolis of Dammam, which aims to raise the proportion of green spaces to 80% of city entrances with areas of up to 900,000 square meters represented in Dhahran-Jubail Road, King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Road, the intersection of King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Road, and Bouhadriya Road.
