As war rages on, how can Ukraine’s reconstruction be financed with the help of the private sector? This delicate question was at the center of the conference which opened on Wednesday in London.
Last March, a year after the Russian invasion, the World Bank estimated that 411 billion dollars – three times the country’s GDP – would be needed to rebuild Ukraine. Since then, the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam at the beginning of the month alone has caused damage estimated at 1.2 billion euros according to the first estimates of the Ukrainian authorities.
