The award was presented by Speaker of the House of Advisors Enaam Mayara, in his capacity as President of the PAM, to Speaker of the Jordanian Senate Faisal Al Fayez, on behalf of King Abdullah II.

This distinction, announced last May during the PAM General Assembly in Braga (Portugal), was awarded to the Jordanian Sovereign, in consideration of the efforts made and the humanitarian aid provided by Jordan.

On this occasion, Mr. Mayara said he was happy to take part in the award ceremony in recognition of the great actions of King Abdullah and his country, particularly with regard to humanitarian aid to the Palestinians and the Gaza Strip.

The parliamentary official also welcomed the excellent and solid relations between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and his brother, His Majesty King Abdullah II.

Mr. Mayara also highlighted the constant efforts of the King and the government of Jordan in support of the Palestinian cause, peace and stability in the Middle East, in a “difficult context, where the Palestinian people, including children, the elderly and women, are daily victims of massacres and flagrant violations of the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.”

He recalled, in this sense, the constant calls of the PAM for a peaceful solution to the conflict in the region, on the basis of the two-state solution, “in order to put an end to violence and massacres, and so that the peoples of the region can live in security, stability and dignified living conditions”, noting that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is convinced that peace, stability and development in the region cannot be envisaged in the absence of a political solution to the conflict and the important role of Jordan”.

For his part, the President of the Jordanian Senate, Faisal Al Fayez, expressed, during this ceremony in which took part in particular the Ambassador of Morocco to Jordan, Fouad Akhrif, personalities representing the Jordanian Senate, as well as a delegation of the APM, his joy at receiving this Prize on behalf of the King of Jordan “in recognition of the tireless humanitarian efforts deployed by the Sovereign to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip, for his unwavering positions in favor of stability in the region, as well as for the search for comprehensive political solutions in favor of peace and prosperity.

Mr. Al Fayez also stressed that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is called, more than ever, to play a “vital role in addressing the catastrophic humanitarian situation” in Gaza, stressing the importance of the Parliament in calling for “an immediate and lasting ceasefire and promoting a permanent and comprehensive political solution, based on the two-state solution, in addition to ending the dangerous Israeli military operations and violations in the West Bank, including East Al-Quds, which threaten to exacerbate regional tensions.”

The PAM Award is presented annually to individuals and institutions in recognition of their significant efforts to promote the Assembly’s mission and values in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region, including in mobilising and delivering aid during disasters and humanitarian crises.

Founded in 2005, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is an international organisation comprising 34 member parliaments from the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions. Its main objective is to achieve effective parliamentary diplomacy at regional and international levels and to build political, economic, social and cultural cooperation among member states, in order to find common solutions to the multidimensional challenges facing the region, as well as to create a platform for dialogue, coexistence, common development, peace and prosperity for its peoples.
