“All obstacles to the construction of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant have been removed, the conditions for the scheduled implementation of the construction work are in place.” Rosatom boss Alexei Likhachev made this promise on Friday at a press conference at the large construction site on the Danube.

Together with the State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Levente Magyar, Likhachev took a look at the project progress on site. Rosatom will respect all its commitments, assured the guest, who recalled that this is Rosatom’s first nuclear power plant in the EU.

The concrete mixing plant is ready for use, the assembly of reinforced concrete elements is ready for construction, the soil excavation for Block 5 has been completed and for Block 6 up to the level of the groundwater table. After the soil has been consolidated, the construction pit will be prepared, after which concrete pouring is expected to begin in 2024. The investment will be accelerated, in which 140 local suppliers are already involved. In the coming year, up to 2,000 people will be working on the construction site at the same time.

Survived all geopolitical storms

The State Secretary emphasized that Hungarian-Russian cooperation will survive all geopolitical storms, although the project was not insignificantly hindered by this. “The Paks 2 nuclear power plant project is irreversible,” said Magyar, “it will be implemented despite all doubters and opponents.” This means that Hungary will be able to secure a significant part of its electrical energy from Paks in the future. When asked by journalists, Likhachev confirmed Rosatom’s intention to achieve a Hungarian share of the project of 40%.

Two modern reactor blocks

The basis for the project is a bilateral government agreement from January 2014. The State Office for Atomic Energy (OAH) issued the building permit in August 2022. Rosatom will supply two VVER-1200 3+ reactor units. Their built-in power reaches 2×1,200 MW and the service life is said to be 60 years.
