The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine challenged the refusal to arrest Poroshenko

by time news

The Prosecutor General’s Office appealed the decision of the Kiev Pechersk Court, which on January 19 refused to arrest the investigation of the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and chose a measure of restraint in the form of personal obligations for him. Mr. Poroshenko is suspected of treason over a contract for the supply of coal from the Donbass.

The supervisory authority explained that in his ruling, the judge stated “the legality and validity of Poroshenko’s suspicion of the criminal offenses charged to him,” but chose a measure of restraint that “would not ensure the proper behavior of the suspect.”

“Prosecutors will insist on the application of a preventive measure in the form of detention with the alternative of posting bail in the amount of 1 billion hryvnia (about $35.2 million at the current exchange rate) against the suspect.— ”b”),” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.

According to the investigation, Mr. Poroshenko, using the powers of the president, terminated the contract with South Africa and “at the request of representatives of Russia” signed contracts for the supply of coal from the Donbass. He faces up to 15 years in prison. Mr. Poroshenko considers his persecution politically motivated and calls it “pressure on the opposition leader.”
