The following applies to public toilets: it can always be worse. Tokyo proves the opposite and stages toilets as architectural highlights.

Public toilets are as bad as they need to be. One need only think of the last visit to one of these public conveniences. Whether the tiled room in the subway station, the draughty exposed aggregate concrete hut on the freeway, where there is never any toilet paper but a broken sink is guaranteed, or the metal box on the edge of the city park – one would prefer to give these non-places a wide berth .

Were it not for this terribly urgent need. If you do have to go inside, you can arm yourself against olfactory attacks by breathing through your mouth. Laughter forces you to tiptoe, sometimes to bold leaps across the floor. Now, in open-toe season, that’s especially gross. Just don’t touch anything and then hopefully get out of the cabin unscathed. The general acceptance of these locations is correspondingly poor.
