“Asterix is apolitical”. The publisher of The Adventures of Asterix complained that the diehard Gauls were included, without authorization, in a greeting card from the National Rally mayor of Perpignan, Louis Aliot. The latter made amends on Wednesday.

Revealed by the regional information website The Agglorious, the dispute concerns the councilor’s wishes on social networks on December 31. Louis Aliot used a drawing with around twenty characters from the village of Asterix.

Editions Albert René indicated that they discovered it on Monday, and that they “requested the removal of this image”, because they “were not asked for this use”. “Asterix is apolitical and ensures never to be associated with a party,” added the publisher, which belongs to the Hachette Livre group, a subsidiary of Vivendi.

“We will obviously comply”

The mayor of Perpignan responded: “We will obviously comply.” “I’ve been doing this for five or six years and it’s never been a problem. I do it regularly, or with Tintin for that matter, it depends. They are still icons. But if they want me to take it off, I will take it off,” he added. The image in question was, however, still online on X early Wednesday afternoon.

The Asterix comic strips, which continued after the death of their creators René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, remain dazzling successes. The 40th album, “L’Iris blanc”, was the best-selling book in France in 2023, with more than 1.5 million copies sold in just two months.
