Have you ever wondered what the black dots on your car windshield are for? You probably wondered for a moment about this issue and moved on. These are the kind of things that just exist. However, it turns out that they serve three important purposes: structure, safety and aesthetics. Yes, these points – among other things – protect you.

So meet the “item” – the official name of one of these small dots around the edge of the vehicle’s windshield. The non-removable dark spots that come with the addition of a large black “item strip” are very important. They’re essential for keeping the windshield attached to the vehicle—a tall order for a simple-looking black paint line, but it’s actually a pretty smart and versatile strip: not only does the rough ceramic paint provide a better, more grippy surface for the urethane seal that connects the window to the vehicle’s frame (also called Polyurethane), it also protects this glue from the ultraviolet light that might break it down.

“The modern windshield is a marvel of engineering, and we dare say it is one of the most underrated components of the vehicle. Part of this engineering includes the way the windshield is attached to the frame,” explains a blog post of North Carolina-based body shop DeDona Tint and Glass, “While the inward-facing side of the item allows the adhesive to bond to the glass, its outward-facing side acts as a UV shield to protect the adhesive bond, which would otherwise be weakened by continued exposure to direct sunlight.”

The Autoglaze website added: “They use the black enamel outside the windshield to block the sun’s ultraviolet rays and prevent them from melting the glue underneath the strip.”
