The Quad warns against the use of force in the Indo-Pacific

The alliance formed by Washington, Tokyo, New Delhi and Canberra is united by its distrust of China.

The warning and dodging: it is this strange alloy produced by the summit meeting, Tuesday in Tokyo, of the Quad (Quadrilateral Dialogue for Security). The leaders of the United States, Joe Biden, of India, Narendra Modi, of Japan, Fumio Kishida, and of Australia, the newly elected Anthony Albanese, have just sketched, in very diplomatic language, a parallel between Beijing’s territorial ambitions and the Russian invasion of Ukraine which “shakes the fundamental principles of the international order”.

The Quad has certainly come out strongly against “any coercive, provocative or unilateral action aimed at altering the status quo and increasing tensions in the region, such as the militarization of contested places, the dangerous use of coast guard vessels and maritime militias”, but without ever mentioning China, yet clearly targeted. They did mention the “tragic conflict” in Ukraine, but without naming Russia.
