NATO plays a key role in emergency response and disaster relief operations. Having an overview of the area affected by a disaster is very important for saving lives and preventing further damage. Until now, the only two options available to obtain an overview of a given area involved the use of airplanes or satellites, both of which are expensive and linked to the availability of infrastructure. Stratospheric balloons equipped with a new type of radar, on the other hand, represent a promising solution in terms of low costs, speed of use and fuel savings. In this episode of the “Nato Science” series, a visit to the University of Pisa where, thanks to the support of the NATO “Science for Peace and Security” program, NATO scientists are working on this new system in collaboration with the Australian University of New South Wales.
