The Railroad and wine in the De Vuelta program

In many regions of Spain the railway was of great economic and social importance for the transport of wine and the growth of the wine sector, especially in inland areas, which had more difficult transport.

One of the first requests for a line concession, in 1829, was related to wines, it was that of José Manuel Díez Imbrechts from Jerez who intended to connect Jerez de la Frontera with El Puerto de Santa María. Project that did not come to fruition, but whose basic objective was to facilitate the export of bocoyes with Jerez wines, mainly to England.

But there were also projects and “wine trains” in other regions, which transported wines from the area to other parts of the Peninsula in different types of wagons and vats. And to the ports, from where they were sent to other countries.
